Halloween Extravaganza 2006
Spicy Spicy Spice Cake
Like most holidays, one of the greatest things about Halloween is the abundance of food. Be it miniature chocolate bars or some home baked goodness, Halloween brings out the glutton in all of us. For this chilling entry, Bear and I decided
to do some pre-emptive baking on this cold, September day. Bear decided that today would be a great day to break out the muffin tins and fill the apartment with the aroma of miniature spice cakes.
Having no baking abilities, I volunteered to document the project and serve as the official taste tester, while Bear agreed to do the actual baking and demonstration. For those who don't know, Bear actually had some hand modeling experience and you
can still catch a glimpse of her mitts if you venture into a Michael's or other craft store.
Bear started with a thick, rich, spice laden batter. Looking at the picture, it's hard to imagine that this could ever be transformed into anything so tasty and I even had my doubts. But Bear assured me that with a little effort and an oven, we'd have miniature spice cakes. In fact, she was so confident,
she even licked the mixer and if it wasn't for the presence of the camera, I'm pretty sure she would have licked the inside of the bowl.
After testing the batter, Mary then poured the contents into the muffin tin, carefully assuring that each compartment received just enough. Then it was time to really apply the heat. With the oven preheated to the perfect spice cake producing temperature, bear synchronized her watch and slid the tin into the oven.
"What happens now?" I asked. "Now we wait," she said. And we waited. It wasn't long before my olfactory senses began to pick up trace amounts of spice cake in the air. And it wasn't long before the entire apartment was filled with the scent of spice cake goodness. I'm sure the neighbors were even enjoying the autumn fragrance. Almost thirty minutes later, Bear
carefully donned an oven mit and, behold, she had produced spice cake. I shouted with glee.
Bear then slapped my hand and chided me for trying to taste the cake. "We have to frost them first," she shouted, briefly channeling Martha Stewart's dark side. Bear said that the best frosting for spice cake was nothing more than some cream cheese, cream and confection sugar. I suggested we add a slice of avacado and call it California Spice Cake, but she was adamant with the cream cheese.
Once the cakes were each topped with the frosting, but Bear wasn't done yet. I guess that spice cake doesn't adequately represent the fall because Bear wanted to dress them up a little. Reaching into the bulk bag of candy corn we'd purchased days before, Bear carefully selected a candy to crown each of her cakes. "They're beautiful," I exclaimed.
Be honest, you've probably never seen such beautiful spice cakes in your entire life. I said they were the best miniature spice cakes in the world USA. To properly display their beauty, Bear arranged them on a plate and I even cropped out the background so you can focus on the cake.
And how did they taste? If you guessed like a little bit of heaven, you'd be correct. They had everything a miniature spice could want. Spice, frosting, cake and even a decoration on top to remind you it was autumn. They were delicious. To be sure, I even took a plate to work to share with my co-workers and they all agreed that Bear's spice cakes were the best ever.
